Fashion Trends In 2013

Every year, new trends are set. Designers create something different all the time, and it’s hard to keep up with the changes. Here we feature some of the top trends for 2013.
  • Aztec print: this trend once went by another name, “tribal.” Aztec can be found on anything from jerseys and leggings to wedges and earrings. Combine your aztec item with plain pieces for a toned-down look, or go all out and wear aztec all over.
  • Peplum: peplum should only be worn by women with a waist-to-hip curve. A peplum top can be worn down with jeans and flat shoes for the office, or dressed up with a skirt and heels. A peplum dress looks great with few accessories and feminine heels.
  • Satin: this is a very ladylike trend, and it can be worn during the day or night. A satin dress is best left for evening events, but you can definitely rock a satin shirt or pants to the office. Just remember to keep it restricted to one item at a time.
  • Patchwork: patchwork items are pieces of fabric sewn together in asymmetrical patterns. Since this is a very busy-looking trend, offset it with plain and simple pieces. If you are going to wear patchwork trousers, choose a plain colour top and simple shoes.
  • Ruffles: this trend is everywhere, from bridal gowns to table cloths. Runways this year are jumping on the ruffle bandwagon. Designers are bringing out ruffled dresses, tops, hair pieces and even shoes.
  • Lace: this trend is generally best left for evenings, because it is so eye-catching and alluring. You can, however, bring this trend to the office. Wear clothing with small lace details, such as a shirt with lace on the sleeves or jeans with a lace hem. Lace dresses and other fully lace items belong in the evening setting.
  • Python: this trend keeps coming back. Python print is generally found on accessories such as shoes, handbags, belts and sunglasses. This year, dresses, pants, skirts all feature the slinky print.

Carnaby's year long celebration of music comes up trumps this Saturday with a free music festival. 15 bands, including A*M*E and Young Knives, will grace different venues along Carnaby Street , or the main stage atop Liberty's roof. Giveaways and street food sellers make this a summer-in-the-city must.

'Anna Nicole' star Agnes Bruckner on her transformation: 'It took an army'

Last week, costume designer Deborah Everton gave us a peek inside the sexy wardrobe for the explosive new Lifetime movie Anna Nicole. Now, star Agnes Bruckner is letting us in on what it was like to step into the Guess model’s falsies.
“The physical transformation was unbelievable,” Bruckner told reporters during a conference call about the project. “It definitely [took] a team of people. … We had cheek prosthetics, neck prosthetics. There was a fat suit. There were so many different looks that she had [over the course of her life]. We probably changed my look three or four times a day on set, which was really crazy.”
Of course, there were also those prosthetic breasts, which were created by a special-effects team. The actress estimates that the daily process took an hour and a half each day, with the exception of day one, which took around three hours to get things just right.

How did Bruckner handle her new assets? “With a lot of glue!” she laughed. “We came up with what size we wanted the boobs to be. We didn’t want them to be ridiculously large because we wanted people to focus on the story more than just focusing on her boobs.”
Everton recently echoed the sentiment, telling EW.com, “I think everybody on the team agreed, ‘Let’s not go there because it would be too distracting.’ Still, in a way, they had to be their own little mini-character.” To reduce time, the wardrobe team was tasked with finding padded garments, so they wouldn’t be dependent on those prosthetics. “I would say 80 percent of the time, the breasts were built up in my department — with padded bras and chicken cutlets.”
The actress also wore fake eyelashes, while her hair was, mostly, all her own. “I bleached my own hair, but we had pieces woven in and different wigs for the more Marilyn Monroe look,” she said. “It took an army. It’s not easy to make somebody look like that every day and keep switching the look up too.” The hair and makeup team relished the challenge. “It was everybody’s dream character!”

Box office report: 'Monsters University' stays on top with $46.2 million; 'The Heat' hot, 'White House Down' not

It’s been a great June at the domestic box office — and thanks to a jam-packed slate of robust earners, the month finished strong this weekend. In fact, the top five films all earned over $20 million.
Monsters University stayed on top of the chart with $46.2 million, marking a slim 44 percent drop over the Friday-to-Sunday period, which was lower than the second weekend declines of Brave (49 percent), Cars 2 (60 percent), and Toy Story 3 (46 percent). The well-received family film has earned $171.3 million total after ten days — and it will definitely surpass the original Monsters Inc.‘s $251 million cume. The film will face a formidable challenge next week, though, when Despicable Me 2, which has been cleaning up overseas (it’s already earned over $50 million from just seven countries), hits theaters on July 3.
In second place, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s buddy-cop comedy The Heat scored an excellent $40 million — a career-best debut for both stars. The film, directed by Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig, cost Fox only $43 million to make — and it will surpass that figure by Tuesday. The Heat‘s great debut trumps the opening weekend of McCarthy’s other 2013 hit, Identity Thief, which began its run with $36.3 million on the way to a $134.5 million finish.
As might be expected, adult women drove business for The Heat, which carries an R-rating. According to Fox, audiences were 65 percent female and 67 percent above the age of 25. Crowds issued the film an “A-” CinemaScore grade.
World War Z dipped 55 percent into third place with $29.8 million in its second weekend. The Brad Pitt zombie thriller, which Paramount says cost $190 million (though reports place its budget in the $200-250 million range), has now earned $123.7 million after ten days. Such a strong gross seemed nigh-impossible a few months ago due to the film’s awful press during production, but its a testament to Paramount’s marketing team that World War Z has been as successful as it has. (That being said, it has a long, long way to go before it’s out of the red).
In fourth, White House Down got off to an awful start. Sony’s $150 million Roland Emmerich-directed film, which stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, only earned $25.7 million in its opening weekend (which includes Thursday showtimes beginning at 7 p.m.). That’s lower than Olympus Has Fallen‘s $30.4 million start in March (that film cost just $70 million), and it’s likely that Olympus‘ remarkably similar White-House-taken-over-by-terrorists plot hurt White House Down‘s chances. The action comedy seems unlikely to join Tatum’s recent line-up of $100 million hits including Magic MikeThe Vow21 Jump Street, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation — though its “A-” CinemaScore may help it achieve some legs at the box office.
Notably, White House Down played to more women than men this weekend. According to Sony, audiences were 51 percent female — the same majority as World War Z last weekend. The idea that action films are primarily driven by male business is quickly evaporating at the box office.
Man of Steel, rounded out the Top 5, falling 50 percent to $20.8 million in its third weekend. The $225 million Superman film stabilized nicely from its alarming 72 percent Friday-to-Friday drop last weekend, and it has now earned $248.7 million domestically and seems on pace to finish with about $300 million total.

In milestone news, Summit’s $75 million magician caper Now You See Me passed the $100 million mark in its fifth weekend thanks to a $5.5 million frame. Few expected the film, which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Mark Ruffalo, to be a hit, but after a surprsingly strong $29.4 million debut, it’s become a word-of-mouth favorite and notched tiny drops (like this week’s 30 percent dip) every weekend. With $104.7 million so far, Now You See Me may finish in the $115 million range — a magical result for Summit.

Box office update: 'Despicable Me 2' crushes 'Lone Ranger' on Wednesday

Those little yellow minions can’t be stopped! Despicable Me 2 easily won the box office race on Wednesday with $34.3 million ($4.7 million of which came from Tuesday night showings beginning at 7 p.m.), putting it on pace for a remarkable $140 million five-day debut. The $76 million film, produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal, will easily notch one of the best opening weekends of 2013. And with an enthusiastic “A-” CinemaScore, the film is on track to quickly surpass The Croods and Monsters University to become the biggest animated hit of 2013.


Disney’s ultra-expensive western The Lone Ranger stumbled out of the gate on Wednesday, wrangling a terrible $9.7 million, which puts it on pace for a five-day debut in the $45-50 million range. The film, which stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, cost at least $225 million to produce and could cause a major financial blow to the studio since westerns rarely play well outside of the United States.
The weekend’s other new opener, comedy film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, pulverized already heightened expectations with an impressive $4.8 million from only 876 theaters. The film, a follow-up to Hart’s $7.7 million-earner Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain, could earn about $18 million in its five-day start — a fantastic result for a film that cost just $2.5 million to produce.
Due to the July 4th holiday, there has been some delay in reporting studio grosses this morning, but check back to EW throughout the holiday weekend for more box office updates — including holdovers from last week — and have a happy Independence Day!

Jay-Z's 'Magna Carta Holy Grail': What do you think?


As noted, Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail has been unleashed on Samsung users, and already went platinumbefore anybody heard a single note.
Of course, because we live in the future, the album was fully available to non-Samsung users moments after the clock struck midnight. There will be a full, in-depth review of Magna Carta Holy Grail on the Music Mix and in next week’s issue of the magazine, but upon first listen, the thing that really jumps out is how impeccable the production sounds. Timbaland, Pharrell, and Swizz Beatz have all brought their individual A games, and it helps prop up some lyrical moments that occasionally feel phoned in (a judgment levied against Jigga over his last few releases).
